Thomas Kerchever Arnold

Ollendorff’s book was published in France in 1835 as Nouvelle méthode pour apprendre a lire, a écrire et a parler une langue en six mois appliquée a l’allemand. Ouvrage entièrement neuf, adopté par le Conseil Royal de l’Université, a l’usage des colléges et de tous les Établissements d’instruction, publics et particuliers de l’un et de l’autre sexe, Volume I and Volume II. In the above quote, Thomas Kerchever Arnold states that he had written a course for Classical Greek along exactly the same plan, but that the cost of publication was prohibitive. In response, he cannibalized his manuscript, utilizing, apparently, only a fraction of the English sentences for rendering into Greek — there are a mere 65 exercises instead of Ollendorff’s usual 200 or 250. To compensate for the absence of a grammar, he simultaneously offered to the public his paltry 22-page abridgment of the Accidence, referenced above. (Accidence means rudiments of grammar.) The result was a head-spinning summary of abstruse rules that would prove impenetrable to a typical reader. As for the Prose Composition, it was the first volume of a proposed two-volume set. When an unauthorized and inaccurate Key was published, TKA rewrote this first volume, dumping the original 65 exercises and replacing them with 82 new ones. For Greek Construing of 1847 he added 61 more. Then when he finally published his First Greek Book in 1849, he included 55 new exercises, and the following year he at last gave the world his second volume of Prose Composition, with a whole whopping 172 exercises, adapted from Xenophon and Plato. To accompany this was his greatly expanded fifth edition of Accidence, which added a further 79 exercises. Then in his Second Greek Book of 1852 he added 77 more exercises. I presume that these added exercises were all pulled from his abandoned Ollendorff look-alike. So let’s do some elementary arithmetic: 65+82+61+55+172+79+77=591, more than double the size of an Ollendorff. Thus, I suppose it would be possible largely to restore his original work by the process of reverse engineering. What a task that would be, though! A mountainous jig-saw puzzle. If his original manuscript still survives, it is imperative that we locate it and publish it. I hereby volunteer my services as typesetter.
